Lacasa’s Resident Leaders Return from the NeighborWorks Community Leadership Institute Inspired and Empowered

Attending the NeighborWorks America Community Leadership Institute (CLI) in Minneapolis, MN, was an inspiring and energizing experience for the Lacasa team, Goshen City staff, and resident leaders from Goshen’s Chamberlain neighborhood. The annual event brought together community leaders from across the country to share experiences, learn from one another, and gain tools to strengthen their neighborhoods.
From the very beginning, the conference was filled with moments of culture, connection, and inspiration, including a moving opening ceremony featuring American Indian and Chinese cultural performances that set the tone for the week. Among the most powerful moments was hearing from Dolores Huerta, the legendary labor leader and civil rights activist who co-founded the United Farm Workers with César Chávez and coined the phrase “¡Sí, se puede!” (Yes, we can!). Her message of empowerment, unity, and community action resonated deeply with all who attended.
Throughout the conference, participants engaged in sessions designed to strengthen leadership, deepen collaboration, and foster meaningful community engagement. These sessions provided practical tools for communication, coalition building, and creating spaces where residents feel seen, valued, and connected.
“Beyond the learning, CLI reignited a sense of confidence and purpose. It reminded us of the power we each hold as leaders to influence change, bring people together, and turn vision into action. We left inspired, reconnected to our “why,” and ready to bring fresh energy and ideas back to our community,” shared Daniela Panetta, Lacasa’s Director of Community Building & Engagement.
Coming back home, the team is looking closely at the opportunities that lie within this neighborhood. They recognize that there is a sense of disconnection between people and place that many residents feel. The goal is to address that by creating intentional and meaningful ways for neighbors of all backgrounds, languages, and generations to come together.
Through a community project, they hope to create spaces and experiences that spark connection, encourage ownership, and cultivate pride in the shared neighborhood.
The lessons and inspiration from CLI have reaffirmed our belief that change happens when residents lead with purpose and unity. Together, they are committed to turning that inspiration into action building a neighborhood where everyone feels seen, valued, and connected.
Additionally, Lacasa was honored to be recognized by peers from across the country.
“We were proud that our resident leaders experienced firsthand how well-known Lacasa’s work is throughout the NeighborWorks network,” Daniela said.
CLI left the team reconnected to their purpose and committed to turning inspiration into action. The lessons learned and the relationships built at the event will continue to guide their work in building stronger, more resilient neighborhoods.
