The reason one Goshen homeowner applied to Lacasa’s Help-A-House program was simple.
“I wanted to be safe in my home.”
Her home needed changes that would make everyday life safer, including a walk-in shower and new flooring. They weren’t repairs she could easily put off, but on a limited income, paying for the work herself presented another problem.
“If I didn’t get Help-A-House, I would have had to go into debt for repairs,” she said.
Through Help-A-House, the needed work could be completed without putting that additional financial burden on her.
She described the application process as fairly easy and the people she worked with as friendly. Today, she can enjoy a safer home alongside Rascal and Jaz, her two dogs.
For homeowners with limited incomes, a major repair can create a difficult choice. A home may be owned outright or have an affordable monthly payment, but that doesn’t make the cost of replacing flooring, addressing accessibility needs, or completing other significant repairs affordable.
Help-A-House exists to help eligible Goshen homeowners address those needs and preserve the homes they already have.
This homeowner also wanted the people who financially support the program to understand what their contributions make possible.
“This is a very good program that helps people get repairs done who can’t afford it, and it goes back to our community, so it’s a win-win.”
Every Help-A-House project is different because every home and homeowner is different. In this one, the result was something fundamental: a homeowner who feels safer in her home without having to take on debt to make it happen.
We are grateful to the donors who support Help-A-House and make it possible for Lacasa to continue this work in our community.
