Give the Silverwood Mennonite Church volunteer crew a checklist, point them toward the work, and stand back.
That was the case again Saturday when a group from Silverwood spent the day at 340 W. Hubbard Street in Elkhart, one of Lacasa’s current home rehabilitation projects.
By the end of the day, they had painted two rooms, moved the front entry steps, installed siding on the front entrance, removed a large overgrown shrub, strengthened the back entrance overhang, cleaned the basement and installed windows.
It was a long list—and they got through it.
Dave, who has been overseeing much of the hands-on work at Hubbard Street for Lacasa’s Real Estate Development team, estimates the volunteers completed what would have taken him six to seven days on his own.
That matters, especially as the Hubbard rehab gets closer to completion. Every day of work volunteers take off the Real Estate Development team list gives them time to tackle something else at Hubbard or one of the other properties Lacasa currently has underway.
The 2-bedroom, 1-bath home on W. Hubbard Street was donated to Lacasa and is being rehabilitated before being sold to a future homeowner. Over the past several months, volunteers have played a significant role in getting it ready, working alongside Lacasa staff on projects ranging from window installation to cleanup and construction.
Silverwood has volunteered with Lacasa before, and we’ve learned something about this group: they show up ready to work.
Thank you to the Silverwood team for giving us your time, skills and a very productive Saturday.
